Boy and Girl Scouts

Attention scouts: get your horse-related badges here.

Kinni Valley Riding Academy has developed programs specifically designed to help Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts earn their horse fan, horse rider or horsemanship merit badges. Our badge curriculums are designed to cover all badge requirements, stress safety and are approved by The Girl Scouts of the USA and The Boy Scouts of America.

Girl Scout Badges | Boy Scout Badges

Kinni Valley conducts scout programs all year, rain or shine. We’re located just thirty minutes east of the Twin Cities in western Wisconsin. If your troop is ready to earn its horse-related badges, Kinni Valley Riding Academy is the place to be.

At Kinni Valley, we create experiences that exceed the requirements for scout badges. Here, troops are taught by professionally trained instructors (in many cases, Carolyn, our owner runs the events). In addition, scouts get a full hour of riding instruction on their own horse through our beautiful trails. If it rains, your experience is never hindered: we’ll ride in our spacious, competition-sized riding arena. When you choose Kinni Valley for your scout event, be assured that you’re getting the best experience for your investment.

Girl Scout Programs at Kinni Valley Academy include:

Horses! Horses! Horses!

Girls seem to have a natural affection for horses that begins early in their lives.  At Kinni Valley Academy we say, “Why wait?” We’ve developed an early riding program for Daisies and Brownies that allows them to come pamper and ride our gentle, beautiful horses before they’re old enough to earn their Jr. badges. After learning about horse and barn safety, the girls will groom a horse and learn about tack and tacking. Once they’re ready to ride, we’ll head out on the trail for a riding lesson along the peaceful Kinnickinnic River. What could be more fun than that?

Price:  $35.00 per person, helmets are provided and required.  (Minimum age: six)

Horse Fan Badge

Approximately two hours, the horse fan badge focuses on safety, building confidence, and cultivating respect for horses.  Students participate in an interactive demonstration where they learn:

  • Safety
  • Grooming and Tack
  • Saddling
  • Horse breeds, colors, and Uses
  • Horse Care and feeds
  • Beginning equitation

Following the demonstration, scouts will put their knowledge to use on a riding lesson along our three miles of trails.  Should it rain, we’ll ride in our heated, indoor arena.  (Our indoor arena is competition-sized. This means there’s plenty of room to ride and your experience isn’t diminished just because it’s raining.)

Price: $35.00 per person, helmets are provided and required.

Horse Rider Badge

The horse rider badge stresses a “hands-on” horse experience.  Our program is geared to riders with a general understanding of horses and offers the next level of training for your girl scout.  This clinic includes:

  • Etiquette and safety
  • Basic horsemanship
  • Saddles and fitting
  • Bits and bridles
  • Conformation
  • Emergency procedures
  • Compare English and Western riding styles
  • Nutrition and care
  • Horse careers

The Girl Scout Horse Rider badge program is approximately two and a half hours long and expands on the information learned in previous lessons (horse fan program). After a thirty- minute discussion, instructors will teach and assist riders as they groom and saddle their own horses for a trail ride. In addition to taking in the view and fresh air, scouts will perfect their control of their horses and refine their horse riding skills during their one hour riding lesson.

Price: $45.00 per person, helmets are provided and required.

Happy Trails!

Horsemanship at Kinni Valley Academy starts early.  We’ve developed an exciting and challenging "hands-on" riding program for Cub Scouts, starting their horse experience while preparing them for their upcoming Horsemanship Merit Badge. Our professional and fun instructors introduce the boys to horse and barn safety, and assist them as they groom and tack a horse. Once they’re ready to ride, we’ll head out on the trail for a riding lesson along the rustic Kinnickinnic River. Yee-Haw!

Price:  $35.00 per person, helmets are provided and required.

Horsemanship Merit Badges

At Kinni Valley, our Boy Scout Horsemanship merit badge programs are approved by The Boy Scouts of America.  During this interactive program we assist the boys with completing all of their merit badge requirements while allowing them to experience the fun, excitement, and challenge of working with a horse.  The first segment of instruction will include the following:

  • Horse and barn safety
  • Grooming and Tacking
  • Horse breeds, color and uses
  • Bits and bridles
  • Conformation, soudness and uses
  • Feeds and nutrition
  • Compare English and Western riding styles
  • Basic Equitation

Following the interactive demonstration and discussion, scouts will have a riding lesson that focuses on fulfilling the riding requirements of their merit badge.

Price:  $45.00 per person, helmets are required and provided
